Internship Programme

We are a Reformed and evangelical Church committed to worshipping God, growing in our love for one another and serving the city of Sheffield. We are a diverse congregation who celebrate the saving love of God for us in Jesus. As a church we recognise we are but one piece of the glorious tapestry God is weaving together for his glory. There is a sense in which, as Christians, we are in a relay race, seeking to pass on the ‘baton’ of the gospel. We are to receive, guard and pass on the good news that Jesus Christ has “abolished death and brought life and immortality to light” (2 Timothy 1:10).

Christian discipleship is not a ministry programme. It is a way of life. However, being set aside for involvement in ministry provides unique opportunities for growth in grace. Our internship programme aims to invest in men and women in order to equip them for fruitful lives of service in God’s world. We would love you to consider this opportunity which is a year-long programme starting in September 2026.

Aims and Aspects

An internship programme would allow the church to set aside people to serve the Lord, explore their gifts and develop in their own walk with the Lord in three main areas:

    • Knowledge: A teaching and personal study programme aimed at deepening understanding of the Bible and how to apply it to life.
    • Skills: Training and practical experience to develop core skills such as teaching the Bible, one-to-one discipleship and evangelism.
    • Character: Mentoring and discipleship to help interns reflect on what they are learning through their study and experience, and to apply this in their own lives as the Lord shapes them in their service.

There would be three main components to an intern’s responsibilities on a week-to-week basis. The exact involvement in these areas is flexible and can be tailored to suit the gifts of the intern and the needs of the church:

    • Training: We anticipate that Wycliffe interns would spend up to a day and a half a week studying, both in group settings and through a programme of personal reading and study, supported by a mentor.
    • Ministry: We foresee that an intern would have a particular ministry focus, seeking to support and develop ministries within the life of the church. Some of the ministry areas could include:
      • Student discipleship
      • Children & youth work
      • Outreach
      • Pastoral visitation amongst the elderly
    • Practical service: This would provide an invaluable serve to the rest of the church as well as developing qualities of servant-heartedness and humility which are vital for Christian ministry.

Qualities of the Candidate

We would be looking for enthusiastic Christians who are keen to learn, serve the gospel, and gain experience in a local church context. In particular:

    • People who have a commitment to the importance and centrality of God’s word in their own lives, and a desire to share and develop that in others.
    • A Christian humility that is shown in an eagerness to learn and a willingness to wholeheartedly serve in a variety of contexts.
    • A willingness to commit to Wycliffe Church as a member, agreeing with our Basis of Faith, Doctrine Distinctives and Ethical Statements as found in the Church Handbook.

Financial Arrangements

The internship would be split into paid, training and voluntary segments:

    • 14 hours at a salary of £10,500 p/a. See requirements of this role.
    • 1 ½ days a week training.
    • 1 ½ days a week of voluntary ministry service.
