Our
Beliefs
As a Church, in all matters of
faith and conduct our primary authority is The Word of God. However because many
interpret the Bible in different ways we belief the Savoy Declaration of faith to
be an accurate statement of the truth of God's word. The Savoy is virtually identical
with the Westminster Confession of Faith and Order. Copies of these may
be obtained from the Church Officers. Our beliefs can be described as Evangelical
and Reformed. Evangelical because we believe that the Bible is the Word
of God and that it is the only authority for all our faith and practice.
We believe that salvation is by the grace of God alone and through faith
alone in the Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered the penalty for our sins by
dying in our place. We believe that apart from the Lord Jesus Christ there
is no other Saviour and that, without Him, men and women remain guilty,
lost and bound for hell. Reformed because we believe those doctrines which
are sometimes called Calvinistic but which we would prefer to call the Biblical
doctrines of grace. At the heart of these great truths is the fact that
God is absolutely sovereign in every realm including our salvation. It is
He who by His Spirit convicts us of sin, gives us repentance and faith,
sanctifies us and enables us to persevere in the faith. This does not, however,
reduce human responsibility in the slightest degree.
Whilst agreeing together on the great essentials of the Faith, we agree
to differ and to respect one another’s convictions on other important but
secondary matters. Amongst these we place baptism, so we provide for both
the baptism of adult believers, and the children of believing parents who
wish their children to be baptised. This is one way in which we implement
the Biblical teaching about the unity of all true believers.
